The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge… 2 Samuel 22:2-3

In this verse, the Lord’s character is alluded to in the concrete image of the rock. How much more concrete can you get than a rock? Rocks in this time were used for protection and to build stable structures. This is one of the most obvious pictures of the dependability of God. Fortresses were made from rocks. In this case however, the fortress was made from the rock-like faithfulness of God.

So, then David personalized his relationship to God with his faithfulness to God. Fortresses were also used as a refuge when people had to face a fearful enemy. God is also our refuge when we must face our fear and doubt. This verse is like a tiny picture story of the relationship between God and David. The Bible is replete with such pictures and images. These pictures help to display and describe emotions and relationships.
