Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:4

This verse has been the grounds of a wrestling match for many people over the centuries. How can someone delight themselves in the Lord if they are getting severely abused or mistreated? This seems to be very difficult to the sane mind.

To delight yourself in the Lord is a decision that must be made by the individual claiming the promise. Delighting in the Lord means that we derive the most pleasure out of what He gives us over what the world has to offer.

Only the Lord Himself knows the real desires of our heart. We often don’t know them ourselves because the heart is fickle and enamored with worldly pleasures. God has wired us to get the most joy from experiencing a relationship with Him more than anything else. He knows that when He chooses to act, it is the greatest joy we can experience. It is the Lord Himself who knows the best circumstances for all our needs and affections. This will more often occur when we prioritize the Lord to be the chief desire of our heart
