The Lord has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
Psalm 94:22

Have you ever been in a fortress? The Lord wants to teach you about an invisible one that is very real. In ancient times, armies lay in siege to take a fortress and a city. In our day, our enemy lays siege to the fortress of our thoughts. Our enemy attacks with vain imaginations and dark imaginings about our future. This is despite the fact that at least 90 percent of these never come true. Our enemy uses these thoughts to control our emotions, which leads us to make poor and hasty decisions about our present and our future. The enemy knows if He can control our thoughts, He has taken over the fortress of our mind.

The psalmist said this does not have to be so in this verse. This is because he has chosen the Lord to be his fortress and not his own circumstances or strength. The enemy uses our circumstances and our own strength to defeat us when we depend on them as a reality for what we see.

The Lord God wants to become our refuge and provide for us a resting place when we don’t know where to go or what to do. We frail human beings often need this benefit to make it through a trouble filled day. So, the question is, what fortress will we choose to defend us in the days ahead?
